Pip's Tip's and Other Eggciting InfoAnd for something rather random this week...who wants healthier shinier hair? My little big sister from another mother hasn't used Shampoo or Conditioner for over 15 years. She uses eggs to wash her hair.....and yes I had visions of half-cooked scrambled congealed egg through my hair once it hits the hot water, but she assured me this was never the case. So for this week's tip I thought I would do some research, and it turns out, she's not the only one that does this.
The nutrients in eggs are the same ones found in strong, glossy hair, and adding eggs to your beauty routine can refresh even the most frazzled locks. There's a bit of science and a tailored approach depending on your hair issues - mix in aloe vera, essential oils and lemon juice to target specific problems.
An unbalanced diet, chemical treatments, environmental damage, time of year, and over-styling can all strip your hair's moisture, minerals and protein, leading to dry, weak strands that break and frizz more easily.
Eggs are a nutrient-rich hair superfood: Vitamins A and E, biotin, selenium, calcium, magnesium, potassium, phosphorus and folate all help keep hair thick and healthy. The yolk's healthy fats replace moisture for shine, and since hair is 80% protein, egg protein helps replenish what's lost through styling and heat. Yolk lecithin also promotes growth and smoothness.
Use organic free-range eggs from hens with outdoor pasture access for the most vitamins and minerals - naturally, I'd say ours are perfect for this! A squeeze bottle with a nozzle makes application easier.
1. Moisture Mask One - 2 organic eggs, 1 tsp lemon juice, 10 drops lavender oil, 10 drops rosehip oil. Beat until frothy, apply to hair, cover with a shower cap, leave 20 minutes, then shampoo and condition.
2. Growth Serum - 1 organic egg white, 1 tbsp warmed coconut oil, 1 tbsp aloe vera gel. Mix, massage into scalp and roots for 10 minutes, wash out, follow with conditioner.
3. Full Hair Mask and Split End Sealer - 1 organic egg, 1 mashed banana, 3 tbsp milk, 1 tbsp olive oil, 1 tsp honey. Apply to hair ends, cover, leave 60 minutes, rinse with cool or lukewarm water.
4. Shine-Boosting Mask - 1 organic egg yolk, 1 tsp castor oil. Apply root to tip, leave 30 minutes, rinse warm, then finish with a cold-water rinse to seal the cuticle and boost shine.
5. Clarifying Shampoo - 1 organic egg, 4 drops peppermint oil, 1 tsp honey, 1 tsp baking soda. Blend smooth, apply like shampoo, massage in, leave 10 minutes, rinse cool or lukewarm - no conditioner needed.
6. Moisture Mask Two - For dry hair: 2 egg yolks + 4 tbsp natural yoghurt. For oily hair: whites from 2 eggs only. For normal hair: whole eggs. Mix, apply to tangle-free hair, leave 20 minutes, rinse with cold water.
